Given the situation we find ourselves in we are going to have to make some enormous choices.
Perhaps this is an opportunity to reflect and question some of the "certainties" we have assumed in our decision-making.
One thing that springs to mind is the Garden Bridge. It's already proved hugely divisive and will be massively expensive.
Do we really need an ornamental bridge over the Thames of questionable merit or should we concentrate on relieving the stress on existing crossings like the Blackwall Tunnel, the Rotherhithe Tunnel and Tower Bridge. There are still few options to get across the river in East London if one of those is closed.
It may be that the project is too far along to cancel economically but if events of the last couple of weeks are anything to go by, everything is up for grabs.
What about HS2? This project is already under scrutiny. Playing devil's advocate but could we use that money for something else?
What might that something else be? Well Richard Pope has some ideas.
